Recent figures from Alibaba's Bailian AI platform reveal that Weibo's professional weather product, Weather Tong, has achieved the leading position in weather-related MCP (Model Context Protocol) calls, with two million total invocations that surpass its closest competitor, Moji Weather, by more than seven times.
In early June, Weather Tong officially launched its MCP Server for AI developers. Designed as a professional meteorological tool with low entry barriers, comprehensive features, and accurate forecasting, this server delivers high-precision, real-time weather queries and forecasts to AI developers and enterprises. It covers essential capabilities including current conditions, forecasts, disaster alerts, air quality, and lifestyle indices, facilitating rapid integration of professional weather services into AI applications. The Weather Tong MCP Server is currently available on Alibaba Cloud Marketplace, the Bailian platform, and Coze.
The Bailian AI platform, introduced by Alibaba Cloud in October 2023, serves as a one-stop development and application service platform for large language models and stands among China's primary AI Agent development environments. Its core purpose is to assist developers and business users in leveraging large models to quickly deploy AI capabilities within their operations. Despite its recent arrival on the Bailian platform, Weather Tong's MCP Server has demonstrated rapid growth in call volume. Platform data shows that on August 20, Weather Tong's call numbers overtook Moji Weather; by August 25, they had doubled that figure. Currently, the total calls for the Weather Tong flagship version have reached two million, securing the number one position. Wanwei Yiyuan's weather forecast query service follows with 1.7 million calls in second place, while Moji Weather ranks third with 279,000 calls. This places Weather Tong's flagship version over seven times ahead of Moji Weather in total invocations.
In terms of consumer-side user base, Moji Weather has long dominated China's weather application market. Yet Weather Tong's MCP Server has far exceeded its rival's call volume within just three months of joining the Bailian platform, underscoring its growth potential in AI-related business and developer sectors. This success stems from Weather Tong MCP's combined advantages in tool range and pricing. First, the tool selection is more extensive. The Weather Tong flagship MCP Server offers over 40 professional meteorological tools. Beyond real-time data such as temperature, feels-like temperature, and humidity, the forecast cycle comprehensively covers minute-level precipitation, hourly forecasts for the next 24 hours, and daily forecasts extending 15 days. For specialized needs like travel planning, agricultural production, commercial operations, and actuarial calculations, the service also provides extended forecasts of 40 and 100 days, respectively. Additionally, the Weather Tong MCP Server supports alerts for dozens of severe weather events including rainstorms, snowstorms, and typhoons, with precision down to city, county, and district levels.
Second, the pricing presents a clear value advantage. The Weather Tong flagship version currently offers a free entry-level trial quota alongside pay-as-you-go plans starting at just one cent per million calls, along with tiered payment options. This structure allows developers to manage costs flexibly during testing, agent construction, and scaled deployment phases. To date, Weather Tong MCP has attracted over 1,500 enterprise and developer clients. Through the end users covered by these corporate clients, Weather Tong MCP reaches a consumer base that could range from tens of millions to over a hundred million.
