LME Copper Hits Unprecedented High

On Monday, the three-month benchmark copper futures contract on the London Metal Exchange (LME) surged to an intraday peak of $14,533 per tonne, surpassing the record established in January of this year.

So far in 2025, copper prices have advanced by a cumulative 16%, with the rally underpinned by robust long-term demand projections. Consumption drivers include grid investment, artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centers, electric vehicles, and a wide array of energy-related construction projects, all of which are expected to sustain steady growth in copper usage.

In the near term, however, an imbalance in supply has emerged as a more immediate catalyst for the price surge. Market participants are increasingly concerned that the Trump administration may impose fresh import tariffs on refined copper. This apprehension has prompted a large influx of copper shipments to be diverted to the United States in advance, consequently tightening availability in other regions across the globe.
