On September 3rd, commercial crude inventories fell by 4.5 million barrels to 424.5 million barrels over the week, yet the four-week average of finished product supply dropped 4% year-over-year, pointing to a divergence in demand trends. MHMarkets noted that while this latest report is shifting market views on near-term supply-demand dynamics and capital costs, a single data point is insufficient to establish a definitive trend.

Gasoline stocks declined by 1.2 million barrels, while distillate inventories rose by 800,000 barrels, indicating that refinery output and end-user consumption are not moving in sync. From MHMarkets' perspective, price action should be assessed alongside trading volume, volatility, and cross-asset validation to avoid extrapolating a short-term change into a lasting pattern.

The inventory draw offers some support for oil prices, but gauging fundamental strength will still require monitoring gasoline consumption, distillate supplies, and refinery utilization rates.
