Technical Glitch in UK Air Traffic Control Grounds Hundreds of Flights

Sep 09

On September 8, a technical malfunction in the United Kingdom's air traffic control system severely disrupted flight operations at airports nationwide. All London airports were closed to arriving aircraft, with the restriction in place until at least 11 p.m. local time that evening, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Around 600 flights within the UK were cancelled on that day. London Heathrow Airport was among the hardest hit, with tracking data from FlightAware revealing 156 departing flights cancelled and 186 delayed as of 6:50 p.m. local time. British Airways emerged as one of the most affected carriers operating out of the hub.

The systemic failure prompted widespread chaos across the travel network, with airport terminals seeing significant queues and uncertainty as airlines worked to rebook affected customers. Authorities have not yet specified the root cause of the technical issue or provided a timeline for full system recovery.
