KLA Stock Breaks Falling Channel as $187 Pivot Becomes the Next Test

TradingKey
Sep 08

TradingKey - KLA opens at $185.60, a 7.32% increase from the previous close and almost matching the $185.57 clip reference. The stock has broken out of a multi-week falling trendline, but is now encountering resistance in the $186.93-$187.81. Here, the price is meeting horizontal resistance, a pivot point, and a declining moving average. The fundamentals also look good. Fiscal Q4 hit $3.66 billion and Q1 guidance points to faster growth. Current AI-based spending in leading edge logic and advanced packaging is taking an increasing interest in KLA's process control offerings.

Q4 Revenue Reached $3.66 Billion

KLA reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $3.658 billion versus $3.415 billion in Q3 and $3.175 billion in the prior year. GAAP net income was $1.363 billion and non-GAAP net income was $1.386 billion. On a split-adjusted basis, diluted EPS was $1.04 GAAP and $1.05 non-GAAP.

For full fiscal 2026, revenue hit $13.58 billion and GAAP net income was $4.83 billion. The earnings profile looks good. Since KLA sells highly specialized inspection, metrology, and process-control systems, increasing manufacturing complexity drives more importance and higher value for their offerings.

Q1 Guidance Points to Further Acceleration

For fiscal Q1 2027, management is looking at $4.0 billion plus or minus $200 million revenue and non-GAAP gross margin of 62.5% with non-GAAP diluted EPS looking at $1.06-$1.26, with a midpoint of $1.16.

Looking at the midpoint of the guidance, we are looking at roughly 9% sequential growth from the prior quarter. CEO Rick Wallace has noted the trends are as KLA's grows, and has noted greater growth is expected to occur in the second half of 2026 and carry over into 2027.

AI Makes Process Control More Valuable

KLA’s AI offerings are unique compared to AI chip designers like NVIDIA or AMD. As leading edge logic and HBM rely on advanced DRAM and advanced packaging, shrinking process windows make defects more costly and increase the importance of inspection.

This makes KLA a ‘picks and shovels’ player across various AI architectures, avoiding the concentration risk of one accelerator. AI is also likely to increase the process-intensity control per wafer and per package.

Memory and Advanced Packaging Add Another Tailwind

A large portion of AI systems utilize HBM and DRAM, which along with NAND, require increasingly advanced manufacturing processes and capacity expansion, making the memory manufacturers focus on increasing capacities and upgrading their processes. This is a positive indicator for KLA as more complex memory systems and advanced packaging require KLA’s tools for inspection and metrology.

In addition, the advanced packaging aligns more process steps and creates more opportunity for defects, further increasing the addressable market for KLA beyond traditional front-end wafer fabrication.

Service Revenue and Cash Flow Improve Earnings Quality

The strong recurring revenue stream of KLA’s service business adds stability to a largely cyclical equipment model. During Fiscal Q4, service revenue was close to $820 million. Service revenue for the full year was around $3.13 billion.

KLA also grew strong free cash flow during Fiscal Q4 by around $817 million and for the full year by $3.77 billion. KLA further strengthened its dividend and stock buying program by around $3.35 billion in capital returns to shareholders during fiscal 2026 through dividends and repurchases, further increasing the cash flow and strengthening the focus of the program.

China Remains the Main Structural Risk

Advanced semiconductor technology exports from the U.S. to China continue to pose the main structural risk. The Chinese semiconductor market means that restricting sales will result in decreased equipment and service income.

Stronger investment in the field of AI in Taiwan, South Korea, the U.S. and other regions helps mitigate this risk, but KLA is still exposed to policy changes as the systems it sells for inspection and process control are strategically sensitive.

Sept. 9 and Sept. 11 Are the Next Catalysts

KLA management is scheduled to speak on September 9, at 9:30 AM ET, at Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference and on September 11, at 9:30 AM PT, at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.

Traders will be listening for any updates on process-control demand related to AI, spending on memory, the status of advanced packaging, China, and updated guidance for this and next year’s sales. A further acceleration of the breakout in semiconductor capital expenditures would be bullish for KLAC.

KLA Technical Analysis: $187.81 Is the Breakout Trigger

KLAC closed Friday around $185.60 after a strong rebound from the $167-$172 region, and consolidated to the chart levels of $185.57. Price has broken out of the multi-week declining channel. Prices will continue to rise with a confirmed reversal of the trend after the $186.93-$187.81 zone breaks to the upside.

Bullish technical indicators will be in place after a 2-hour time frame close is made above $187.81 while aiming toward $196.56. Beyond that, the rally predictions aim toward $207.55 and $214.58.

Currently, RSI of 69 is below 70 but above the ~43 signal line, demonstrating strong momentum and the potential for consolidation around resistance. Potential support levels lie on the downside at $176.81. Breaking below that level would allow $167.06 to become key support.

Why is KLA stock in focus?

KLA is seeing strong investment in AI-driven Semiconductors across logic, memory, and advanced packaging. They are also reporting results and Q1 guidance indicating further acceleration. Outside of these releases, there are two near term catalysts in management appearances at Citi on September 9th and Goldman Sachs on September 11th.

What level confirms another KLAC breakout?

A 2-hour close above $187.81 would clear the main pivot level and strengthen $196.56, $207.55.

Bottom Line

KLA’s fundamentals are in a strong position, as practices begin to speed up, and process control and free cash flow are in place. The stock exited its falling channel, but $186.93-$187.81 is where we will see confirmation. I’m more bullish as long as we’re above $176.81, and above that level $187.81 is a clean break for us to target $196.56 and $207.55.
