Europeans Still Prefer to Invest in Home Markets

1038 GMT - European retail investors prefer to invest domestically despite pessimism about the continent's economic outlook, ING's chief economist Marieke Blom writes. An ING survey of European consumers found 38% prefer to invest in Europe, versus 14% who prefer to invest in the U.S. "Despite a lot of negativity surrounding the economic outlook for Europe, a large share of Europeans would prefer to put their money to work here" Blom says. More money invested in European equities would help support equity valuations on the continent, and would also help draw money to private companies, the economist says. The Europe-wide Stoxx 600 is up 9.6% so far this year, compared to an almost 13% gain for the S&P 500.
